Transport

Transport represents 12% of global CO2 emissions and emissions from transport are projected to rise by 30% by 2020. While most of these emissions will be from air travel, the exponential growth in car ownership will be a significant proportion of these emissions, not to mention the critical challenges of urban mobility and pollution. Beyond the massive investments required in public transport, there are opportunities for addressing both the environmental and the economic challenges inherent in transport through innovations such as:

  • Transport cooperatives, car-pools and car sharing.
  • Local production and sale of bio-fuels from cooking and agricultural waste.
  • Reducing “food miles” and commercial congestion associated with centralized food marketing through regional urban-rural food systems.
  • Micro-enterprises that retrofit two stroke engines (eg motor cycles) for fuel efficiency (and significant CO2 reductions).
